COLOMBIAN CITY ALLOWS BOTH MIFARE AND CALYPSO TICKET STANDARDS ON ITS BUS LINES

The city of Pereira, Colombia, has adopted the new “CrazyWriter” HF RFID reader from SpringCard for its mass transportation test site. The SpringCard readers in kiosks and turnstiles, implemented to distribute tickets and give access to passengers, are showing outstanding results.
• CALYPSO AND MIFARE COMPLIANT
According to Juan Gabriel Giraldo Osorio, Development Engineer, one of the challenges for Recaudos Integrados S.A. was to find a smartcard reader able to read both Calypso cards and Mifare 1K cards (as well as other types of NXP cards), as few manufacturers offer such dual capabilities. “The dual-capability card readers in the ticket admissions system are implemented at some sites around town, including one inside a bus. The point-of-sale register and the admission system, which can read and write on both types of cards, are working effectively, without passengers knowing the difference between ticket standards.”
A next phase is underway to install SpringCard’s reader to equip all the bus lines in the entire city. Pereira’s mass transportation infrastructure serves 30 million passengers a year. Once the installation at this first city has been completed, Recaudos Integrados S.A. is looking at extending this technology to other cities in Colombia.
Initially, most of Recaudos’ equipment was imported. Now the company manufactures the equipment in Colombia, except for the turnstiles. “Now we are the integrators and administrator of the system,” said Osorio. Recaudos Integrados S.A. is an encouraging partner for Denis Pietersoone, CEO of SpringCard Inc. who added: “SpringCard is pleased to assist in the overhaul of Colombia’s transportation infrastructure, and we are looking forward to further successes in the region.”
